Most of our conversation every day is surface-level. How many conversations do you spend talking about the weather? Netflix? How busy you are? We can easily go through life without ever talking about things that actually matter.
Gastrochurch is a gathering to talk about things that matter, especially spiritual things. We talk about forgiveness, justice, growth, disappointment, gratitude, etc. And we do it over food. Something happens when you share a really good meal that makes meaningful conversation easier. We love getting creative with our themes and menus, and seeing where the food takes us.
It's up to you how deep you want to go. You choose to sit with people you know well, or with people you don't. You choose how much you share. Sometimes tables connect deeply, sometimes they don't. Sometimes the evening is hilarious, sometimes it's reflective. But it's rarely boring.
Each evening has a theme, and our themes center on issues in the Christian scriptures. For example, we might focus on a theme of simplicity and serve traditional monastic food, or we might focus on gratitude and serve thanksgiving foods from around the world. With each course, a facilitator gives a brief reflection on the theme, and then gives a discussion question for the table. The questions are intentionally vulnerable; we're not here to talk about the weather.
At the end of the meal the leaders gather to share Communion and prayer. All are welcome to participate in Communion, to stay and keep talking at the tables, or to leave and get on with their evenings. We have gatherings monthly, and they are open to anyone. Our tables are filled with people from all walks of life and all varieties of belief (or lack thereof). We mean it when we say that everyone is welcome at the table.
Events are all donation-based. Your first dinner is on us. After that, just give what you can.
With so many different themes, we're always looking for new ideas. Got a food idea you want to share with us? Own a restaurant and want us to come visit? Have an amazing meal idea and want us to be a part of it? We love to discuss all things related to food, church, and anything in between. Email us at [email protected].

FAQ's
What if I have dietary contraints?
That's perfectly fine. We can work with just about anything. After you register, just email [email protected] with your dietary constraint.
Does this cost anything?
If this is your first time, no. Dinner is on us. If you've come before, we just ask for a donation. Give whatever you can. You can add your donation in the "donation" line of the registration, or find us on Venmo as gastrochurch htx. There will also be a donation basket at the gathering for those of you financially reponsible people who only use cash.
Can I bring friends?
This event is a tailored gathering for our friends at Westminster UMC, so please spread the word to all the members of Westminster you can think of, just make sure to register for the appropriate number of tickets so we know how many to prepare for.
Do I have to register here?
No. If it's easier for you, feel free to call the church office 713-782-7750.
How long will it last?
Our dinner last 2-2.5 hrs, depending on how much people talk. Part of the intention behind gastrochurch is to serve slow food, in every sense of the term. There aren't many times in our society when people spend two hours around the table anymore, and we think that's a shame.
What should I bring to the event?
You are welcome to bring a beverage to share. We'll have a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, as well as beer and wine, but feel free to bring your favorite beverage to share.
How can I find out about future gatherings?
Sign up for our email list to get updates about upcoming gatherings.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Feel free to email any questions to [email protected]. You can also text or call Haley at 281-797-6754.
